Royal Blood are a duo from Brighton, England comprised of lead singer and bass player Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher. They formed in 2011 and have been playing amazing music ever since. Their first studio album, Royal Blood, crashed into number one back in 2014 and spent 96 weeks in the UK charts. Their second album, How Did We Get So Dark, also debuted in the charts at number one and spent 36 weeks total in the charts.

Their sound, although classified as rock, is brilliantly unique. This is because Kerr uses a range of effect pedals to give his bass guitar an unlimited range of voices, including that of a standard electric guitar. Combine this with Thatcher’s sensational drumming skills and they create music that thrills fans of all ages.

Not only do Royal Blood sound fantastic on an album but they put on a spectacular live show. I was lucky enough to see them live in Cardiff, back in November 2017 and it was easily one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen. From the quality of the support acts, to the pyrotechnics, to the quality of the performance from the headline act. Pure talent and the joy of performing on the stage was just incredible.

They are so brilliant at performing live, not only do they headline their own shows and festivals but bands from around the world have had them as support acts at their gigs. From Foo Fighters to Arctic Monkeys, the artists they have supported, as well as the artists that have supported them, both musically and as fans, such as Lars Ulrich of Metallica, has taken the band all over the globe.

Their brilliant albums and fantastic live performances are why Royal Blood are my artist of the week.
