BTS are a 7-piece K-Pop boyband from South Korea. K-Pop (or Korean Pop) first made its way into the western mainstream back in 2012 when PSY released the cultural phenomenon that was “Gangnam Style”. The longer time has gone on, the more K-Pop acts we have seen climbing our charts. BTS are currently considered to be the biggest (active) boyband in the world and are setting records left, right and centre.

BTS are probably known best for their colourful appearance, fast paced dance moves and vocal talent. Many of their songs feature lyrics in both Korean and English, which widens their potential audience as listeners can understand at least some of what they’re listening to. Personally I quite enjoy listening to all of it as they have great harmonies in many songs and their vocal talent is impressive, no matter the language they’re singing in.

Another impressive thing about the boys is their stamina in a live performance. The majority of their songs are accompanied by complex dance routines. They sing, rap and dance without seeming out of breath. Their ability to do this, whilst impressive, is something that many people worry is a result of them being overworked, something that is a a concern about many K-Pop artists. No artists have spoken out on this topic (as far as I can tell) so it cannot be completely proven either way, but some members of BTS have collapsed from exhaustion, but its not known if this was due to pressure from themselves or their label. A video did surface back in 2015, 2 years after the groups debut, of a manager threatening one of the members, but this manager was swiftly dismissed after the incident. This topic will always be debated by fans and I truly hope it isn’t happening and that they are all happy and healthy when working.

Back to their music. BTS have been releasing music since 2013, and whilst they haven’t had a UK number one single yet, they have had two number one albums, and their first number one single could be just around the corner. On Friday (August 21st) they released their brand new single “Dynamite” and it broke records on not one but TWO streaming platforms in 24 hours. This is not the first time the band have broken records, especially not on YouTube and I’m absolutely certain it won’t be the last.

So, whilst BTS aren’t to everyone’s taste (what artist is?), I recommend that you give them a try because you never know, you might find a new love, or perhaps it’ll be fake love…
